ph Guide

ph is the measure of acidity or alkalinity of water. A ph reading of 7.0 is considered neutral, a ph reading higher than 7.0 is alkaline, and a ph reading lower that 7.0 is acid. An acceptable ph range is 6.8 to 8.2. Extreme ph levels above 8.2 or below should be avoided.

Test ph in the morning. ph rises during the day as the water temperature warms up. To lower ph, using vinegar (acid), add 3/4 cup per 100 gallons of pond water. To raise ph, using baking soda, add 1/4 cup per 100 gallons of pond water.

Adjust ph 1 number (point) per day, no more that 2 numbers (points) per day. Rapid ph change is stressful to fish.

Hair algae/blanket weed thrives in alkaline water. Water in the acceptable ph range is one way to control this problem weed.

Calculating Pond Volume
Irregular shaped garden pond:
L' x W' x AD' x 5.9 = gallons in the pond

Square or rectangular garden ponds without plant shelves:
L' x W' x AD' x 7.5 = gallons in the pond
